More From My Stash...

I'm still digging through the keep boxes! Here a some of my re-discoveries for this evening...

My "October Angel"...my Grandma Collier got this for me for my second birthday, October 30, 1959 ~ I was born at 11:58 p.m. ~ 2 minutes until Halloween!...(she's going out in my bookshelves, not back in the keep box) ~ these little figurines used to be so popular; even in the 1970s versions of them were still available (and probably still are) ~ my oldest daughter Mandy had the little "numbered" girls...I don't remember how many she has (they went to live with her), but I know we didn't make it all the way to sixteen before the interest in them kind of fizzled out...:)

Various good stuff! More of my Mom's little books, The Little Red Hen and Loraine and the Little People (copright 1915), a little wooden shoe that was also my Mom's (her father, my Grandpa, had a restaurant and would often let Gypsies/Travelers park their caravans on the property; in return they gave my Mom and grandparents all sort of interesting little things...), and vintage crocheted doilies.

From Loraine and the Little People; "Crest o' the Wave and the King of the Mer-People"... the Art Nouveau influence is so obvious in these pretty illustrations!  The book was written by Elizabeth Gordon and illustrated by M.T. (Penny) Ross.

One of the little Fairy Folk, painting Tiger Lilies...

The "Queen of Sleep", with her poppies...

Jack Frost ~ I think this is my favorite one ~ look at the jingle bells on the mousie's tails!

Look at this...vintage "Extract of Chestnut Leaves" from Eli Lilly, 1917. Supposedly good for circulation and digestion, and a whole host of maladies. There's still some in there! (It would destroy what's left of the cork to try and empty it; I don't think I'll be trying it, anyway.)

That's it for tonight! Hope you've enjoyed looking at more of my hoard...

Happy Friday!

  2. Oh~I love that little book. Lorraine was my cousin's name and she was the closest playmate I had in the country. She was 4 years older than I was. I wonder if Aunt Bessie named her after that because she instilled a fascination in us for the "little people"...

I remember those yearly figurines, too.

Do you remember when old jokes were called chestnuts? I still have a couple of the little "Chestnut books" that were published in the 40's. Totally politically incorrect now.

I hope you have a great Friday-xo Diana

  4. Thanks for stopping by my blog! You take awesome pictures! I had one of those ceramic figures too! I don't even know if I have it anymore. We have moved too much and each time we get rid of more stuff. I wish I had saved so much as they are filled with memories.

  7. Hi Anne, Thank you for being my newest follower. I will return the compliment. Goodness, I have not thought of those adorable little china numbered girls in years. Perhaps 50! hehe, yup am 65, born in 1946, first wave baby boomers, but not the "rich" baby boomers everyone seems to talk about, hehe. My "numbered girls" were birthday girls. Strange do not even remember what happened to them. I am an only child and my parents are gone now. Most likely after I lost interest in them for those ungangly things called "boys" in my teenage years, mom donated them to the church rumage sale. She was always the chairwomen of those sales. Love the brilliant illustrations! Thank you again for your lovely comments and following me. Blessings on your weekend.

  8. Love this post, those fairy bits are stellar. The Extract makes me wonder if it could be used as an ink LOL. I too have bits of crocodile tears and snake oil cures that still have the lurking fluid in the bottom of the jars.
Love these finds. Do you display yours anywhere?
