Ode to a Dog...

Photobucket

His "real" name was Sambo, but he went by Sam, Sammy, Bo...and "Here boy"...He was my Grandpa and Grandma's dog, but I was his little girl...

I'd been looking for this photo all day, and when I finally found it, I just wanted to share it.  He was such a good dog; he had a long-ish, curly, black and white coat, and cute little freckled legs. I remember lying by him and curling his fur around my fingers.  He didn't mind.  Sam wasn't resentful of my coming into his life like my Mom's dog, Taffy, was ~ he just loved me.

I don't know when he was born (he was obviously an adult in this photo from 1956 (we didn't have pet birthday "celebrations"  back then like my daughters and I do for the kitties...;o)) ~ and I really don't remember when he passed away; just that it was a sad, sad day. I had to have been seven or eight.  I remember my Grandma's neighbor, Mrs. Cartwright, crying.  Everyone loved him.

I'm so glad "all dogs go to Heaven"!
See ya, Sammy!

(I added Sammy to The Brambleberry Cottage's Time Travel Thursday.)

I had to add this; Jimmy Stewart on Johnny Carson, reading his poem, "A Dog Named Beau"; I remember seeing it when it first aired.

  1. Anne- What a great looking dog. I'm sure he brings a smile to your heart. He looks like he might have been part Border Collie. Hope you have a great night- xo Diana

  2. Yes they do. A very religious woman argued with me when I said I believed all animals go to heaven. She said they are without souls so they just die. I replied: "then I don't want to go either, if that's the case". She was mortified. Ha!

  5. Every time we loose a dog to old age, I always say never again. But, alas we always seem to get another dog. Never a replacement for the one lost, just another companion. That was quite the poem. Thanks for sharing.

  10. What a thought provoling post! Each cat and dog is so very different - each with their own personality - they keep us company for a while and we love them dearly but like all good things their lives end too soon but they have enriched our lives by being a part of it! The Beau poem - a tear jerker for sure!
