"But is is Art?"...;^)

Yesterday I sketched all day; I'd finally decided I had to get serious about the upcoming art exhibit!...This afternoon the weather was so nice, though, I decided that I'd take one of the smaller paintings (this sketch was based on one of my tuberose photos) outside to work on....bad idea (after the first few little gusts of wind and curious bugs I began to recall why I had never done much plein air painting)!

See the splotches of unforgiving (on watercolor paper, anyway) green on the far right blossom? (I will blame it on the wind!) ~ At that point I decided I would just "play" with this piece (after that post about being less critical of my artwork, more accepting of boo-boos, I couldn't in good conscience just throw it in the trash...) ~

I decided that this would be a good painting to use some of my new Swiss Caran D'Ache crayons on ~ they're very cool water-soluble crayons-for-grown-ups (Blick Art Supplies) ~ I like how they add some texture and color to the dark passages of watercolor!

So, though this will probably not make the cut for the exhibit, I had fun with it...not sure if it's "finished" yet, I'll probably play around with it a little more... some metallics, maybe?

Tomorrow, serious painting indoors...

Happy Wednesday!

  1. Sounds like a wonderful way to spend the day.
I love your painting.. and the Caran D' Ache crayons would be so fun to try! I saw them in Blick catalog :)

Our little town is filled to the brim with artists.
Water color, oil, stained glass, etc.. etc..
Click on 'Joes Pottery shop' on my blog and it will take you to our town site.

We have a plein air painting festival, an artist studio tour.. etc..

Just maybe you've heard of some of our artists.. that would be cool.

    Have a wonderful evening.

  2. I learned along time ago.. Lost a cottage painting to a HUGE gust of wind.. Well, I saved it, like you but lesson learned.
    I just love this painting!
    Enjoy your week

  7. This is a lovely painting. You have captured the flower petals and leaves so well and I love the yellow flower centre. I've used watercolour pencils occasionally but I've not heard of water soluble crayons before. I agree they add texture and highlights to the painting and are especially effective against the dark background. Hope you enjoy your painting today.

  14. Anne love your tuberoses - I know what you mean about painting outdoors - sketching is okay but watercolor takes a bit more patience. Love the idea of Caran Crayons - I use colored pencil at times to cover up mistakes. Been thinking about the crayons - may have to get some. Have a blessed day painting - Hugs from Pixie

  19. I think your painting is beautiful! I've bought supplies to try and start drawing again and teach myself to paint but haven't done anything with it yet. For sure I will never be able to create something as lovely as what you have here. Have a great rest of the week. Tammy

  20. To me, it is art. And gloriously done, dear heart. Lovely work, Anne! Love Caran D'Ache! So much fun to play with.
And I do understand about the plein aire thing with the bugs and the wind. Don't know how Van Gogh got so much done! LOL Maybe it was his pipe tobacco smoke which kept him relatively safe from insects?
    ;)
    great article!
