I read today in my Southern Living Everyday Gardener that the more zinnias you pick, the more blooms you get, so I went out and clipped off all the fading ones and picked several to put in my Mom's little "frog" flower bowl...

A whole row of fun!
The SL book also said that zinnias love heat and humidity, and can easily withstand drought...
So glad I can accommodate them!
;^)
Still no rain, though it rained all around us today...it just skipped right over us...
It got really cloudy, though, and "missed a real good chance" as my Daddy would always say.
Please keep sending those rainy-day feelings our way!

One more thing...(no, not another zinnia...) ~ my first tuberose is blooming!
H-e-a-v-e-n-l-y fragrance, if you've never experienced one...just a very heady, intoxicating scent! And, it becomes much more pronounced after dark...
Last year we had Hummingbird Moths visit the tuberoses almost every night... amazing creatures!
♥ ♥ ♥
Okay, this really is the last thing...
A few sources for Zinnia seeds for next year... there are some really interesting ones!

(I like the Benary Giants and Chippendale here...)

(Check out Queen Lime, Zahara Double Cherry, Envy, and Starlight Rose...Yumm!)

(I like the Carousel Mix here...)
I don't think I can wait until next year!...It said 6 weeks from "planting-to-bloom"...and we don't get a killing frost until very late November... (Did we even have one last year?? The petunias that are still blooming from Spring 2011 say "No"...) ~ I think I'm going to have to order from Swallowtail!
Have a great Thursday, everyone!

I think what is so lovely about zinnias is the number of variations you get. The ones that look paint splashed are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI have now added 'tuberose' to my list of things to consider for next year's garden!
Do try them, Tracey! You will love them...and if you bring them in (or just bring the pot into the garage, or protected area) they will just keep carrying on year after year and multiplying; I think one reason the blooms on mine are a little smaller this year is that the pot is too crowded; I should have divided them. There is also a double variety, which is actually prettier, but the "Mexican Single" is more fragrant.
DeleteThese are wonderful! I admit to not having known the name of these flowers, but I always admire them. Beautifully photographed. x
ReplyDeleteThank you, Minerva!
DeleteBeautiful! I particularly like the colours of the second image, reminds me of raspberries and cream ... xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you! You know, I think I actually did see a "Raspberries & Cream" variety listed with one of those nurseries!
DeleteWe have also zinia's in our shop ...they are so beautiful......enjoy your day darling...xxx..
ReplyDeleteThank you! I am just SO taken with them! :) (As you can tell!)
Deletethey are gorgeous. i should have planted them here if they love sun, heat and no rain! we actually got rain yesterday. wonderful beautiful big storms. i thought i died and went to heaven! hope you get some soon!
ReplyDeleteThank you - I hope we do! I'd love a good stormy day!
Deleteoh , are these beautiful..? What would the world be like without this kind of nature. BJ
ReplyDeleteLast year I saved some of my zinnia flowers and harvested the seeds. I gave them away on my blog and used the rest in my garden. I love the varigated colors your zinnia's have.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what's prettier...the flowers or the photos of the flowers!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gina!
DeleteDear Anne - Zinnias are so gorgeous...I know this drought is so bad...here in Ohio we have been dry-finally got some rain yesterday. Pray you get some soon. Loved seeing your paintings framed and grouped together. So beautiful. Take care my friend and I'll do my best to look up and send you rain.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Pixie, Dear! Glad you got some rain, anyway! We were "teased" by thunder and lightning to the north late last night, but again, nothing came of it...:(
DeleteThe zinnias are beautiful. I wish I had planted some this year as it is so dry. Rain all around us too but none here.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen a tuberose. It is beautiful.
Thank you, Barb - my Grandma always grew them, and the fragrance just takes me right back to that time...she and my Grandpa Launius were also the only ones to have air-conditioning in our family in the early 60's, and Grandma would keep a vase of them on the little table in front of the AC unit...such a treat to spend the night there in the dog-days of summer!
DeleteAnne, I have been a little behind in my reading of blog posts...so will comment on a number of your recent posts. Love those zinnias, just beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe posts I really have enjoyed are your paintings!! Oh my what great bold colors and love the subject matter! I am in awe of your talent.
Your zinnias are gorgeous and I like the little snow(?) effect you have going. Sandie
ReplyDeleteFollowing :-) The zinnias are beautiful! You mention hummingbird moths - I first saw them last year, and I was scared of them until I searched around and found out what they were! (Yes, I'm a scaredy cat when it comes to insects.)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful!! I love zinnias and tubor rose :)
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of a Humingbird moth..I will look it up. That second Zinnia photo is a beauty. The fairy sprinkle is cool. :) I have to admit when I visit your blog I have a hard time leaving. :)
ReplyDeleteJust found your great blog. Your flowers and knowledge of them is amazing! Great photos, too.

Hi Anne! Oh the sparkly zinnia photo is magic!
ReplyDeleteZinnias are a flower from my childhood, and my Mom loved them too. I remember all the blooms and bright colors and how pretty they were in my Mom's garden. For some reason, I've never planted them, and seeing your pictures makes me wish I had--Next year!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI hope your week ends on a good note!!
Your Zinnas are beautiful. And such a variety too. Due to dryness and not watering that part of the yard ours didn't come up this year.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you let some of the flower heads dry up before cutting them you can store them in a paper bag and plant them next year.
Blessings to ya!
Just couldn't get enough of these beautiful pics!
ReplyDeleteWhat amazing photographs of such beautiful, varied flowers! I've only seen rather boring ones from florists here in the U.k. With all our rain and no sunshine my garden is looking a lot less colourful than yours!
ReplyDeleteThanks for calling by my spot...
Jane xx
Your Zinnias are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteTotally delightful, thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteOh zinnias, beautiful zinnias - I have some on my deck this year for the first time, and I'm in love with them! Next year ... less geraniums (I'm having no luck there) and more zinnias! Hugs ~ Mary
ReplyDeleteyour photography is amazing, so are your painting, below, anne! very nice to meet you:)
